Happiness through comparison

TCS CEO salary hike

I saw this news on facebook and as usual, there were lot of comments by people asking when they will increase the salary of the employees( may be they asked this on a lighter note).

But I am talking about a deeper issue here. I am aware that most IT companies follow an appraisal system along with an employee grievance system. So that means, people do get a chance to raise their concerns. Moreover, most of the people, who did not feel comfortable after reading this news, might have actually felt happy when they got their hike or ratings.

But then, when you see someone else earning a lot of money, more than you, you burn inside. You don’t know what to do. All the happiness you had about the salary you earn, just vanishes. There are many people who are contend with what they earn until they learn about the money their friends/ spouse/ relatives make. Suddenly they start feeling that they are earning ‘peanuts’ ( the term used by one of my previous managers)

Dude, what about the fact that, this person( whom you feel envious about) actually deserved and might have earned that kind of money through his hard work and correct decision making.

Isn’t it funny that, all our happiness is based on comparing and not based on absolute terms. The things we possess, the relationships that we have, and the happiness we derive out of them are all based on comparison. When will this constant comparison end ? When will be stop passing on these same destructive values to our children ? When ? When ?

Reminds me of the parable of the unfair workers from the Bible, Matthew chapter 20, verses 1-16

9 “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. 10 So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11 When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12 ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’

13 “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? 14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15 Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’
